Why One Family Worries They Will Be Separated

Mixed status families are a reality for many in the immigrant community. Some family members are documented while others are not. At an immigration rally in Houston in 2017, I met a ten-year-old boy with a fear that he would be separated from his parents who are undocumented. I produced a story about the family and how they live with constant uncertainty about their future.

Crowdsourced Houston Projects

At KUHF, Houston Public Media, I helped launch the station's first call-in public affairs show, Houston Matters. For the show's launch, I reached out to listeners to define and create content on what Houston means for them.

On daily deadline, I produced minute-long and two-minute spots for Atlanta's NPR station. From regional leaders passing a $6.1 billion transportation draft list to intra-state legal battles over water usage, I covered general assignment stories by quickly studying an issue outside of my beat or by developing expertise by following events and news on the beats that I developed.

NPR Stories during the Kroc Fellowship

As an NPR Kroc Fellow, I rotated through NPR’s major news departments every three months, producing the web component to radio stories on NPR.org, condensing host-and-interviewee conversations for radio broadcast on Weekend Edition Saturday, reporting stories for NPR’s National Desk and its member station, WNPR in Hartford, CT.

Major Presbyterian church may consider leaving its denomination

I broke a story about one of the largest Presbyterian churches in the country considering leaving its denomination. One of the issues of concern was a narrow defeat by the denomination on the redefinition of marriage. I covered the process of what it means to leave a denomination, and I covered the church members ultimate vote on whether or not to enter a procedure for reconciliation or dismissal.

Immigration Stories

At WABE News in Atlanta, I created the station's first-ever immigration beat. The big state political story in 2011 was the passage of a strict new immigration law. On daily deadline, I covered the politics surrounding the law, analysis of similar measures in other states and the effect of the law on the city's immigrant and business communities. For a series that I did for the station that coincided with when the law went into effect, I won a statewide award for “Best Series Reporting” from the Associated Press. (That series is highlighted in the awards section of the website.)

Georgia Businesses Suffering from State Immigration Law

Parts of a tough new immigration law went into effect Friday in Georgia. It's the latest instance of a US state seeking to make it harder for illegal immigrants to live and work within its borders. Earlier this week, a federal judge blocked some of the law's provisions. But other parts of the legislation are now being enforced, such as the one that makes it a felony to use false information when applying for a job.
